The Real Alaska With American Safari Cruises

Alaska is a wonderful vacation destination, and one of the last unspoiled spots on earth. The state is huge, and most tourists follow the same path and thereby miss out on some of the most spectacular wilderness scenery available.

This is not the case with American Safari Cruises. The company offers small, yacht-like ships that cruise into hidden places to allow guests the opportunity to kayak amongst glacial gardens of icebergs, hike paths lined with wildflowers and mushrooms in old growth forests, visit small, native villages and anchor overnight in hidden coves and bays.I recently took a trip to sample the new products American Safari Cruises will offer in 2011. In addition to two ship and two separate itineraries, American Safari will also introduce a lucky 49 passengers to "Adventure Cruising," or the "un-cruise." The ships are the Wilderness Adventurer and the Wilderness Discoverer, and they will sail from Ketchikan to Juneau, and vice versa, so you will have time in these cities for a little shopping and sightseeing.Our cruise began in Juneau, which is one of my favorite cities and a spot worth having an extra night to explore. The Goldbelt Hotel is right across from the pier, so it is incredibly easy to stay there before embarkation day.Departure is spectacular as you sail down the channel through the Tongass Narrows headed to Windham Bay, where the ship docks for the evening. A kayak demonstration is given onboard, so even if you have never been in a kayak, you will be able to take to the water immediately.

Daily activities on the ship include guided kayaking trips (both long and short to accommodate the different levels of fitness), sightseeing with a guide by skiff (a rubber motorized boat) to explore the shoreline and search for animals and sea life. There are many species of birds in Alaska only seen in the remote wilderness areas, and the guides are extremely knowledgeable about all of the flora, fauna and sea creatures you might encounter on your trip. Guided hikes are also offered each day and are again geared to a variety of fitness levels. Many hikes lead to hidden waterfalls and lakes or actual treks across a glacier.One highlight of this cruise are the evenings in Frederick Sound for whale watching. Prepare to see countless numbers of humpacks and possibly orcas. Sometimes, there are babies in the water with the pods. We spent several hours watching the whales breach and feed as at sometimes the boat is surrounded. Everyone is so quiet, you can hear the whales breathe -- a truly spectacular experience.

One of the most beautiful sites is Scenery Cove, which is aptly named because the cove is mirrored in the glass-clear waters. It is the perfect place to spend the evening hours contemplating nature or take a late evening kayak. Another highlight of the trip is our day at LeConte Glacier. The boat is as close to the glacier as possible, and you can watch the giant formation move and calve. However, since the entrance to LeConte is usually filled with ice, we found it better to kayak in the area.The bay in front of the glacier is aptly named a glacier garden as the icebergs are spectacular. Deep blue ice rises 10-20 feet out of the water with bubbles trapped inside. Every berg is different, and they change constantly as some break off and sink lower while others turn completely over. Some are even shaped like semi-circles, and you can go inside with a kayak or skiff and be surrounded by ice. We spent hours marveling at these incredible icebergs and took hundreds of photos. I have never seen anything like it anywhere else in Alaska.For our town visit, we explored Wrangell. I have passed the small village many times while cruising through on a large ship, but the harbor is too small for most big boats. The town is nearly devoid of tourists. (There's not even a T-shirt shop in sight!) The Clan House is a wonderful museum built in 1939, and the interior features many totem carvings as the main support for the painted ceiling. The tribes of Tlingit Indians and other Wrangell natives are proud of their heritage and doing their best to preserve it. They are also happy to share their unique history with you.We also enjoyed the Stikine River and Shakes Glacier in this part of the state. A jet boat carried us up the river delta and through an ice field from an up-close and personal view of the glacier's face. There are also lots of bear to be seen in this area as well as many eagles and their nests.
Another entertainment option is fishing for salmon, halibut or anything else in season. We fished out of Yes Bay Lodge while we were anchored overnight in Yes Bay Cove.
On our last evening aboard the ship, we enjoyed a wonderful dinner followed by a stroll along the deck. Once outside, we were surprised and delighted to spot several families of Orca whales. We were surrounded for at least an hour as the creatures put on a show for us, coming ever closer to the ship. It was a fantastic conclusion to the cruise, and we enjoyed yet another spectacular sunset as we set sail for Ketchikan.I would recommend small ship cruising in Alaska to all of my clients wanting a truly unique perspective on and experience of this magical land.

Antigua

Stunning beaches, rainforest covered mountains, warm and friendly people, and amazing live music...These are the descriptions that come to mind when I reflect back on the two weeks I just spent on the island of Antigua. Blessed with captivating vistas, a rich culture and too many beaches to count (365 to be exact - one for every day of the year!), Antigua is one of the most memorable islands I've ever visited in the Caribbean.

Whether you're searching for the ideal honeymoon or family destination, Antigua has something to offer everyone. The key is knowing which property to select, which is why I opted to stay at a number of different resorts while on the island. I found each one to be incredibly unique in feel and atmosphere.

The Verandah: Eco-friendly, all-inclusive hotel located on the northeastern part of the island. It is a great choice for families with a moderate budget who want lots of activities for everyone. Highlights of this property include a gorgeous beach with calm water perfect for young children, lovely landscaping, an excellent Kids Club facility, and some of the best live music I had the pleasure of hearing while visiting Antigua. A different band plays every night by the main pool bar, which creates a fun atmosphere for the guests. My personal favorite was a nine person steel drum band - everyone was dancing that night!

Carlisle Bay: "Contemporary luxury on the beach" is the description the hotel provides on its website, and I couldn't agree more. It is a polished, yet unpretentious hotel well suited for both families and couples, although couples should expect to encounter a number of young families while on property. I was a huge fan of the Beach Suites, which are spacious, two bedroom accommodations literally steps from the beach. As a mother of two young children, I found the layout to be ideal!

Other highlights from Carlisle Bay include a lovely beach, incredible food, unusually good fitness and tennis facilities (including nine courts - the most I've seen anywhere in the Caribbean), a consistently attentive staff, and a top notch Kids Club facility. I also loved the nightly children's buffet, which was complimentary and served poolside every night from 5-6:30PM. It was wonderful to feed the children early in a casual environment, then hire a sitter to play with them while my husband and I enjoyed a quiet dinner alone. Heaven!

Curtain Bluff: I would best describe this legendary, all-inclusive hotel as The Greenbrier meets the Caribbean. It is charming, elegant and friendly - the quintessential Caribbean resort. What makes this property so special is the owner and the staff. Mrs. Hulford and her late husband started the hotel almost 50 years ago, and their vision has resulted in a unique culture among the Antiguans who work there. Many of them have been employees of Curtain Bluff for decades, and their loyalty and pride is immediately evident upon check-in.

In addition to two breathtaking beaches, I particularly loved the rooms, dining options and the spa. Built just a few years ago, Curtain Bluff's spa has a spectacular setting on a bluff overlooking the Caribbean.

The main dining area is so romantic that it reminded me of a set from a movie. An enormous tamarind tree is the anchor of the courtyard, where a different band plays nightly. Guests enjoy superb service and gourmet dining in this amazing setting. Once finished with dinner, many guests opt to dance under the twinkling white lights that flank the pavilion.

Jumby Bay: Ultra-luxurious hideaway located on a 300 acre private island, which is accessible only by ferry from the mainland of Antigua. Immediately upon arriving at the dock, guests feel like royalty as they are greeted by a polished staff offering a rum punch in one hand and a cold-scented towel in the other.

This all-inclusive hotel recently underwent a massive renovation, and the results are magnificent. The rooms are incredibly luxurious, all offering amazing views of the ocean.

A new infinity pool sits on a bluff overlooking the water, and guests taking a dip are just steps away from enjoying a wonderful lunch at the Pool Grille. I particularly enjoyed spending time at The Verandah - Jumby's newly designed beachfront bar and restaurant. Other highlights of this Rosewood property include a stunning, long beach great for relaxing or walking, complimentary bicycles for traversing the island, and elegant (yet casual) bars ideal for enjoying your favorite cocktail.

Canyon Ranch Spa

December began with a toast to healthier living for me. Some friends and I went on a four-day trip to Canyon Ranch Spa in Tucson, Arizona. We managed to experience many of our favorite activities and challenge ourselves to new adventures.

The lifestyle experts at Canyon Ranch tailored a life-changing fitness strategy for each of us. The major focus for me was a program of body movements for flexibility and balance, so that I can alleviate the pain I had grown so accustomed to. The classes were varied and each instructor brought a new and fresh approach to the class. The women's stretch class (full to capacity every time) had a different instructor each day, so the class was not repetitive. I felt great leaving the Pilates studio after Gyrokinesis, a new system of exercise that systematically opens the joints.

The meals served in their fine dining restaurant -- all healthy -- were scrumptious. I came home with several new recipes and am slowly trying them out.

The life-enhancing lectures opened up a whole new world of possibilities from learning how to grow and change the dentrites in my brain cells to having a new appreciation for everything in my life.

The rooms are comfortable and typically Southwestern in style with lots of amenities. I only took one shower there because I often ended up showering in the fully-equipped women's locker room after a session in the steam room, soak in the hot tub, massage or some other pampering regime. At night, no one batted an eye as I strolled back to my room in a bathrobe. I then curled up in the comfortable beds and fell asleep early. After all of the spa treatments, exercise classes and lectures, it was a real surprise to fly back from Tucson to Atlanta, through Dallas, with no leg room and still find the trip very comfortable.

I will go back to Canyon Ranch again and recommend the holistic experience to everyone.

Royal Palms Resort & Spa

In addition to her outstanding knowledge of all things spa, Kitty Armstrong is a specialist in travel to the Mediterranean, South America, Canada and the United Kingdom -- to name just a few of her favorites.

The Royal Palms Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona was exactly as the name entails -- ROYAL. The facility is a gorgeous, old Spanish Colonial Estate that has been transformed into one of the loveliest places I have ever visited.My Deluxe Casita was in the spa section of the estate, and I was thrilled with my proximity to such an amazing facility. It was a beautiful spa, with fountain terraces as part of all the treatment rooms. The service was also impeccable, and I lacked for nothing during my stay.

The food was also outstanding, as well as the romantic setting. I ate dinner on the patio with a roaring fire (fans under tables kept me cool enough to really enjoy the warmth).

The pool, which was surrounded by gardens, also had fabulous service, Walking the gardens was a wonderful, quiet experience even though the hotel was fully-booked and hosted a wedding that night. (My Casita was next to the honeymooners, and the walkway was lit with candles and flower petals that had been placed along the pathway up to their door. I noticed the special touches the next morning.)My Casita also had an enclosed patio with a fireplace as well as an outdoor shower connecting to the indoor shower. It was a heavenly place to hide out!

I left the Royal Palms relaxed, refreshed and ready to tell my clients all about the resort's amazing amenities and accommodations.

Miraval Spa & Resort

The Miraval Spa & Resort is a true treat. There are lovely Casita-style rooms with spacious baths and walk-in showers. Miraval offers many amenities for couples, but also has rooms with two queen beds for friends traveling together. My room had a lovely patio surrounded by vegetation. The main resort has a small and intimate feel to it -- perfect to set the scene for relaxation and serenity.

The villas and newer rooms (suites) are lovely and modern, but away from the main resort. You really have the feel of the barren desert staying there. The spa was magnificent and offered many over-the-top treatments. My favorite was the Cranio-Sacral, which I knew nothing about before arriving at Miraval. I enjoy trying new treatments on each spa's menu, and the Cranio-Sacral treatment was the closest I've ever come to an out-of-body experience. I wanted it to last forever!

The Signature experiences often fill up as soon as they are posted on the bulletin board (three days in advance of the experience). But many times, the wait list will clear, so I had to learn not to be discouraged when the list were full.

I also participated in the Equine Experience with Wyatt Webb (author of It's Not About the Horse). It was a great learning experience, and I will recommend it for some, but not all.
There were many activities for couples to participate in, and I was surprised to see so many men there -- mostly in their 30s and 40s.

The food was quite spicy, and the menu was broader than most spa menus -- not limited to just rabbit food. The outdoor restaurant was small and especially lovely in the evening.

Miraval is a true treat that I would recommend for those wanting to experience the best of both traditional and cutting edge resort spas.

Caneel and Little Dix Bay

Beth Flowers is a leisure travel advisor who specializes in trips to the Caribbean, U.S. cities and Disney. She also focuses on honeymoon travel, vacations with young families and romantic and girlfriend getaways.

"Welcome to St. Thomas!" I hear the greeter say as I enter the Caneel Bay lobby at the St. Thomas airport. Behind him is a nice, cozy area with snacks and drinks to enjoy while I await transfer to the ferry. My luggage has also been whisked away before I can think about carrying it myself, and as soon as I turn around, we are at the Caneel Ferry, Lady Caneel, with a rum punch (the real thing -- fresh fruit and all) in hand. I take a seat and watch the islands go by as we make our way to St. John.When I arrive at Caneel, the sun is setting and the lush flora and fauna of this former Rockefeller estate and Sugar Mill reflect the colors of the pastel sky. Washing the sea salt from my body with a lemon grass towel, I'm refreshed and then taken to a wonderful seaside cottage that I'll call home for the evening.

For dinner, I enjoy a fresh mango colada to start, and then it's on to lobster tails with fresh veggies from the island and crab cakes. But, the best part of this meal and my walk back to my room is certainly the birds and animals singing under the crystal clear skies full of stars only seen in the Caribbean.The next morning, I awake bright and early to enjoy coffee and pastries on the terrace before a full island buffet breakfast. On my way to the main pavilion, I am again struck by the sheer beauty of the surroundings here. Could this be the Hawaii of the East? Rockefeller was one of our first "naturalists," and this is the perfect place to experience the purity of creation.

Ahead of me, I see a deer, so I slow to a creep. Past her, I see two baby deer -- each no more than a foot high. Dad is around the corner, and there are cousins, too. A family of deer enjoy their quiet morning, and so do I.

Breakfast is swift and delicious, and I don't delay as Rico, my island escort, is waiting to take me over to Virgin Gorda. I am one ferry and one car away from yet another paradise.Arrival at Little Dix Bay via boat is stunning. The waters as as clear and blue as what you see in a perfect aquamarine stone set with diamonds. Greeters with drinks and cold towels welcome me, and since I've checked in on the boat ride over, it is straight away to my suite. The rooms are amazing and the bathrooms and outdoor showers immaculate. I almost pinch myself because of the dream-like surroundings.Lunch is a light affair, and the fresh smoothies are the perfect dessert. This resort is known for its cuisine, and the chef never disappoints. I spend the afternoon by the pool and later enjoy the beach, where attendants take care of my every need. It is true bliss.In the afternoon, we board the resort's boat for a sunset cruise to the island's secluded beaches and bays. The orange and pink of the sunset are as vivid as I have ever seen them. For dinner, there is lobster, fresh tuna, halibut, chocolate and berries.Everything about these islands is breath-taking, slightly sinful and delicious -- just as it should be on vacation.

Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain

The one night I spent at Sanctuary was the most relaxing of my life. The reason? The very best spa treatment I have ever had. It was the Sanctuary Signature Body Ritual.

As the Sanctuary describes it: "Designed for all skin types, our signature body ritual features fresh coconut blended with fragrant jasmine, vetiver and gentle buffing grains to hydrate, soothe and polish dull skin. This ritual concludes with a luxurious application of Creme de la Creme lotion. The 90-minute treatment includes a full-body massage."My traveling companion enjoyed the Wild Lime Blossom. According to Sanctuary: "This zesty, aromatic scalp and full-body massage is the perfect remedy for jet lag and fatigue. A special recipe of hazelnut, avocado and macadamia oils is blended with wild lime blossom, sandalwood and ginger. The oil is warmed and vigorously applied to your scalp, neck and shoulders to stimulate ciruclation and nourish your hair. While the oil penetrates your hair, a full-body massage with Japanese Yuzu citrus extracts relieves mental exhaustion. The session end with a cup of Green Tea."

She, too, has experienced lots of massages and said this was the best she had ever had in her life. So, it must just be the Sanctuary!

Before the massages, our host treated us to a delicious lunch in the beautiful fine dining restaurant with spectacular views of the mountain and a site inspection. I did not get to view the Spa Casitas, as they were all occupied, but I did see the property. It's a great spot for tennis lovers.
My own accommodation was a huge Mountain suite Casita. I had dinner on the patio and breakfast delivered by room service in the living area at the magnificent dining room table. There was even a fireplace, and the bath, while not over the top, was lovely.

I have recommended this resort many times and would never hesitate to send clients here. The service is impeccable.

Anguilla and St. Barts: An Ideal Island Combination

It took me all of three seconds to answer my colleague's question, "Would you like to join me on an educational trip to visit two Virtuoso properties on Anguilla and St. Barts?" Yes, yes, yes! I'd visited both islands several years ago, and they remain on my list of favorite Caribbean destinations. I therefore jumped at the opportunity to see them again and gain more knowledge to share with my clients.

Our first stop was Anguilla, site of some of the best beaches in the world. Like most visitors, I flew into St. Martin and hopped on a boat for the beautiful, 30 minute ride over to Anguilla. The two islands are only a few miles apart, which makes for pretty background scenery if you happen to stay on the side of Anguilla facing St. Martin. I love looking out over the mountains of St. Martin and its twinkling lights at night - a beautiful site!

I was fortunate enough to stay at Cap Juluca, which is my favorite property on the island. I visited the hotel with my husband in 2003 and have been telling people since then that Cap Juluca is one of the most spectacular places I've ever experienced. To say that its mile long, crescent shaped beach is beautiful is an understatement. It is truly one of the most gorgeous beaches I've seen in my lifetime. Add the stunning Moorish architecture of the hotel to the soft, white sand and calm, clear water, and guests will find themselves enjoying a true piece of paradise.

Cap Juluca recently underwent a $28 million dollar renovation, which has taken the famed hotel to new levels of luxury and notoriety. The Main House was completely redesigned, and its Moroccan themed interior is perfectly matched with the architecture of the hotel. Additionally, the rooms were all refreshed with new beds, linens, flat screen tvs and more.

Every room at Cap Juluca is oceanfront and located just steps from the beach. Guests awake to the sounds of the waves crashing, and a few lucky ones like myself might meet the lone green parrot who visits the balconies of his favorite rooms each morning. Most guests opt to have breakfast delivered to their rooms at a time of their choosing. My attendant brought fresh pastries, fruit, and coffee or tea each day and set a beautiful table for me on my patio overlooking the beach.

Dining at Cap Juluca is a five star experience. Their restaurants are romantic, innovative, and the food is incredibly good. I particularly enjoyed Flights, their new wine bar, followed up by a Pan-Asian themed dinner at the new Spice restaurant. Pimms is another excellent option, and its waterfront tables are filled with starry-eyed couples enjoying a romantic evening and gourmet food.

I always recommend that clients rent a car for at least one day while staying on Anguilla. The island is safe, easy to navigate, and there are several other beaches worth exploring. Additionally, the restaurant choices are vast. Anguilla is one of the best islands in the Caribbean for fine dining, so everyone should sample at least a few of them. I have a personal favorite list of spots I share with clients before they depart. There is no shortage of options!

My next destination was St. Barts, which is part of the French West Indies. As soon as my plane touched down, I felt as if I'd arrived at a seaside town in France. The language, cuisine and culture of St. Barts are distinctly French, and the island is a hotbed of upscale boutique hotels, fantastic restaurants, and unique shops. The island is also incredibly scenic due to it mountainous terrain. Picturesque beaches are tucked between green mountains dotted with villas and small hotels. Because of its beauty and high level of sophistication, St. Barts is one of the most unique islands in all of the Caribbean.

I stayed at Guanahani, a legendary hotel and resort located just ten minutes from the airport. Its charming and colorful cottages dot the hillside, which provide memorable views of the water and rocky coast. Frequented by celebrities and well-heeled travelers, Guanahani offers a wonderful combination of luxurious accommodations, world-renowned dining, and one of the most polished and attentive staff I've encountered in the region.

My room overlooked a cove on the other side of the hill and was the perfect spot to enjoy a good book and glass of pink French champagne. When I was ready to venture out of my room, I walked through the hotel's meticulous grounds down to the beach, where a lively bar and restaurant can be found. Additionally, there are comfortable lounge chairs and thatched umbrellas for guests to use. The beach attendants are approachable and attentive, and I enjoyed a few lazy afternoons under their care.

Guanahani's food is so good that I'm not sure I can adequately describe it in this posting. The breakfast buffet is offered poolside by the beach, and the options are endless. Decidedly French, guests can order from a menu offering items such as homemade crepes and cafe au lait. While they wait, they can choose from a vast array of freshly baked pastries, fruit, cheeses, and more offered at the buffet. Le Bartolomeo is Guanahani's signature restaurant. It offers diners a romantic, courtyard setting and fine French cuisine as good as anything served in an upscale restaurant in France. My meal there was one of the best I remember in many years!

The Clarins spa at Guanahani is the nicest spa on St. Barts and a big attraction for guests. The extensive spa menu pampers guests in a serene setting. I particularly recommend the Swedish massage, which left me relaxed and ready to explore the island.

St. Barts is another island great for renting a car. There are so many wonderful restaurants and boutiques to explore, as well as a number of quaint beaches. I recommend packing a picnic lunch and driving to Governour Beach for great swimming, lounging and people watching.

For travelers who'd like to experience more than one island during their trip to the Caribbean, Anguilla and St. Barts are one of the best destination combinations available. The islands are both so scenic and cultured, yet completely different in feel. Travel between the two is relatively easy as well. I am already counting the days until I can go back and experience Caribbean beauty and luxury at its finest.

A Report From Cabo

Troy Haas is the president of Brownell Travel. He recently visited two resorts in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Keep reading for his report on two luxury properties there.

Fresh, new, small and close to town (all other Virtuoso properties are 20 to 40 minutes from town); Capella is a compelling offer for adult couples and small groups of friends. With only 66 rooms, plus 30 two- or three-bedroom residences, this is an intimate property. Contemporary and stylish in feel, all of the rooms are very large, starting at 800sq feet with fireplaces and verandas or terraces.

Deluxe rooms get better views and the Capella Rooms are especially large. Beach casitas are right on the beach and have great walk out access. Of course, you don’t want to try to swim here as the surf is quite large and there are lots of rocks, as is the case in most of Cabo resorts, other than a portion of Palmilla’s beach.

Capella has two elegant restaurants, and we really liked the seafood restaurant El Farallon. It is cut into the rock and hanging out over the waves. We actually got splashed as we dined on a windy night. It has a kind of fish market feel, as you pick your own fresh cut of fish and then they grill it up.

From Capella, a 10-minute walk through the tunnel lands you in Cabo’s marina, so the resort is a great option if you want access to the town. Being so close to town is also great for travelers like us, who want to grab a beer after fishing for marlin. (The fishing is so plentiful, and anyone is likely to get lucky .... I caught and released a 130 pound striped marlin). Cabo is rightly known for great fishing.

Capella also features a fabulous spa with an array of treatments and spa rooms situated so that you can swim out of the treatment room once you’re done. The fitness facility is also new and full of equipment for cardio and strength training.

The Palmilla is another glamorous Cabo landmark. This 50-year-old resort had 80 million dollars spent on it by One and Only in 2004, and it really sparkles post-renovation.

Larger than Capella and our other Virtuoso hotels, Palmillas has 190 rooms and a golf course. The feel is more ‘Mexican’ in architecture and décor, with lovely dark wood accents and metal work contrasting against the white walls.

Positioned on a peninsula with a swim able beach on the north side (preferred side for families as it’s also where the larger family pool is), you get great views -- especially from the southern end and from the portion of the north end closer to the main buildings. We saw whales from our balcony even though it was the end of the season. Entry rooms here (superior and deluxe) are from the original hotel so they are nice, but not spectacular. The junior suites really have the extra room and amazing touches like rain showers with full views of the beach and large verandahs or patios. Butlers are a nice touch, too, if you are into that. (I find it a bit intrusive).At Palmillla, we dined at the excellent Jean Georges restaurant. With its ‘Euro Asian Cuisine,’ you get some of that ‘named chef food bling’ here. The fitness center was superb (great spin class and yoga on the morning we could attend). And the spa, with open air private mini villas, was remarkable. There were also excellent men’s and women’s areas with sauna, steam and outdoor hot tubs.

The four-bedroom Villa Cortez is truly over the top -- 10,000 sq feet right on the ocean and includes a huge movie room and private gym and spa. It sleeps up to 12 and goes for around $10,000 a night -- great for your true VIP types.

I am hard pressed to pick a favorite here as both of these properties are quite impressive. I’d give Capella the edge for couples/honeymooners and Palmilla takes the cake for older adults and families.

London & Cornwall Garden Tour

I had a wonderful stay at The Goring Hotel in London on my latest trip to the UK. The private transfer from Heathrow to The Goring by Lewis Day was lovely, comfortable and informative. My driver, George, filled me in on all that is going on in the United Kingdom. My junior suite at the Goring was fabulous. Larger than I would have expected, I had a third floor garden view, traditional furnishings and a large bathroom complete with a walk-in shower as well as a bathtub. The food there was exquisite in the beautiful dining room with unusual crystal chandeliers. Rooms vary in sizes and furnishings, from traditional, to modern to very modern, and only a few bathrooms have walk-in showers. Give the staff as much information as possible so any client will have his or her perfect accommodations. The friendliness and services of the staff are over the top.

Next to staying at The Goring, the highlight of London was going into the Palace Gates for a private tour throughout the Royal Mews by Jack Hargreaves, the Queen’s lead equestrian. I am not a horse person, but I did love these beautiful, gentle ones.

It was very exciting to see and touch the royal carriages: the one the Queen rides in when Trooping the Colour, the one used at Christmas to pass out gifts to children, those specifically built to transport foreign dignitaries, the one Diana rode in to her wedding, and the carriage the Queen rode in to her coronation in 1953. (As a child, I had watched the coronation on a neighbor’s black and white TV because we did not yet have a television of our own.) And I loved the Queen’s Bentley. It’s clear she’s well protected as those doors are quite heavy to open.
We took a train from London’s Paddington station to Truro, a 4 hour and 17 minute trip. Our first class, reserved seats were very comfortable with two services -- one for complimentary tea/coffee/cold drinks and breakfast for purchase and the same for lunch. The hot sandwiches, cooked on the train, were quite good.

Arriving at Truro, we were met by Toby Ashworth, the owner and proprietor of The Nare Hotel in Veryan -in –Roseland on Carne Beach. Just a short drive through a few quaint villages on Roseland Penisula in Southern Cornwall, we were in for a fabulous treat. A country home by the sea, it is furnished with antiques, cozy furniture and an abundance of fresh flowers. The 36 rooms and suites are all different sizes and shapes, but all are completely charming. Many have sea views, balconies or patios, although some are country views. With indoor and outdoor heated pools, a sauna, steam room and gym, there are many alternates to the expansive beach. Also on property are tennis courts, a croquet lawn and a spa.

It is wonderful place for families. There is even a wonderful three bedroom suite with one being a single child’s room with antique children’s furniture, cubbyhole closets and drawers, another with twin beds and the living area has pull-out couch and room for extras as well as the large king bedroom on the corner of the house.

My bedroom had a balcony facing the sea, and the bathtub had a window over it so I could look up at the stars while relaxing in the tub, and drift off to sleep listening to the waves hitting the beach as the tide rolled in. A separate shower and lots of space were great too.

Two restaurants, a lovely fine dining and a casual quarterdeck both have traditional English cuisine, including Portloe lobster and crab which we watched the staff bring in from the sea in the mornings for our evening dinner. Scrumptious.

Nearby attractions are the Lost Gardens of Heligan, National Maritime Museum Falmouth, Private Cornish Garden and the Eden Project which is not to be missed. I had heard of the Eden Project, but had no idea how impressive and vast it is or how much I would learn. We toured gardens and had lunches in private homes with the many interesting residents who were more than happy to provide interior tours.

I really could have stayed there for weeks, but we had to move on to the grandeur of Hartwell House, a tour of the parkland and a hotel with Jonathan Thompson, the General Manager. I will always book the main house, King Louis XVIII’s one-time home. I was in room 10 which is across the front of the house, and have never spent the night in a more regal place in my life! Everything about it was so comfortable in spite of the massiveness. Even the former servant’s quarters (now standard rooms) on the top floor were very spacious and well-decorated. The spa rooms were new (not my thing in England); however, they would be very nice for families, and the spa was pleasant.

Nearby attractions include Waddesdon Manor, Bichester Village, Woburn Antiques Centre and the city of Oxford. Hartwell House is also only two miles from Aylesbury Rail Station and 35 miles (45 minutes) from Heathrow Airport where we had to, unfortunately, be taken the following morning to catch our flights home.

Belize: Central America’s Hidden Gem

Katherine Gould is a Caribbean and Honeymoon travel specialist with Brownell. She recently packed her bags for the tropics. Destination: Belize. Read below for Katherine's impressions of her luxury vacation in Belize.

The allure of Belize makes perfect sense to me. Where else can a traveler do so much in such a small country? Belize offers numerous, colorful coastal towns boasting white sand, pretty water and some of the best snorkeling and diving in the world. Catch a ride inland and in less than two hours, you’ll find yourself immersed in a tropical jungle providing an endless of array of activities for the more adventurous traveler.

In addition to being a short flight from the East Coast, Belize is the only English speaking country in Central America. These two facts make it a breeze to visit! I also found the people to be incredibly friendly and helpful. They are proud of their beautiful nation and eager to share its treasures with visitors.

I began my week in bustling Ambergris Caye on the Caribbean coast. If you want to snorkel or dive, this is the place to be. Belize boasts the 2nd longest barrier reef in the world (the only one bigger is the Great Barrier Reef in Australia), and it’s unbelievably accessible. A five minute boat ride from shore puts you at the edge of the reef, and sealife is abundant. I’ve snorkeled quite a bit in the past but decided I couldn’t visit Belize without trying scuba diving for the first time. It is the ideal place to learn. We started out in water only knee-deep and before I knew it, I was swimming alongside spotted eagle rays, tarpon, nurse sharks and too many colorful fish to name.

Victoria House offers the most luxurious accommodations on Ambergris Caye, and it’s easy to understand why the resort’s reputation is so wonderful once you’ve stayed there. The rooms, grounds, staff, service and food were fantastic.

I was particularly fond of the beach area at the resort, which was dotted with numerous palm trees and was raked regularly. Visitors should know that Ambergris Caye doesn’t have big stretches of sand, but the water is gorgeous and Victoria House’s beach area was the nicest on the island.

After enjoying a few days of fun on the coast, we traveled two hours west for the next part of our trip - a jungle adventure. Along the way, we stopped at the Belize Zoo, which sits on 29 acres and currently exhibits over 125 animals all native to Belize. I was fascinated by the exotic creatures living there in such a natural setting, and was particularly fond of “Junior,” the zoo’s most famous jaguar resident.

Our choice of accommodations in the jungle was Chaa Creek, arguably the most luxurious and well managed lodge in the country. It’s part of a 365-acre nature reserve set along the banks of the Macal River in the foothills of the Maya Mountains. The owners, Mick and Lucy Fleming, have painstakingly built ChaaCreek from the ground up over the past 30 years. Every aspect of the resort has been carefully thought out and well executed.

The room options are varied and full of charm. There are 23 palm-thatched cottage rooms from which to choose, all of which are beautifully decorated with local furniture and artwork. I loved the treetop suites, particularly because they offer jacuzzis situated on balconies overlooking the river.

In addition to the wonderful accommodations, Chaa Creek ’s food, service and spa exceeded expectations. The Flemings have recently added an infinity pool, where guests can relax in the sun andwatch the abundant tropical birds which can be found all over the reserve. I enjoyed breakfast one morning alongside a flock of toucans eating the berries of a palm tree nearby.

But one doesn’t come to Chaa Creek just for the rooms and food. The reserve and surrounding area offers an vast array of activities for visitors of all ages. A dedicated concierge stays very busy throughout the day as he explains all of the different options to the newly arriving guests and then coordinates their excursions. Hiking, canoeing, bird-watching, visiting Mayan ruins, cave tubing, horseback riding, and mountain biking are just a few of the endless possibilities.

My husband and I chose to visit Xunantunich, a Mayan ruin site, for our first excursion. It was absolutely fantastic! There were no crowds, and the structures were truly amazing. The highlight was a climb to the top of El Castillo, where we were rewarded with lovely views of the countryside from the top of the main temple.

On our last day in Belize, I went on the adventure of a lifetime (or at least my lifetime!). Because I was going to be crawling inside a big, dark cave for several hours, it took a little persuasion for me to agree to visit Actun Tunichil Muknal (more commonly referred to as the “ATM”), one of the most impressive caves in the Maya region. But I’m so glad I put my hesitation aside!

Our guide drove us to the edge of a jungle 90 minutes away from Chaa Creek, where we began our one mile hike to the cave. After crossing three rivers by foot, we arrived at the cave, which honestly looks like something out of an Indiana Jones movie. All total, we explored the inside of ATM for over three hours, climbing huge rocks, squeezing into tight spaces, and wading through the water. It was an experience I will never forget.

This excursion is not for the faint of heart. Upon arrival at the cave, you have to swim to get inside. The water was over my head, and the encroaching darkness was definitely a little intimidating. Once we got inside and turned on our headlamps, however, I was speechless. The vast caverns and rock formations were stunningly beautiful. Even more impressive were the hundreds of Mayan artifacts which literally littered the cave. ATM was used as a ceremonial site by the Mayans for over 700 years, and most everything left behind remains in its original location. Vessels of all sizes, fire pits, and the occasional human remains can be found in the cave. The highlight of the tour is located in a dry chamber deep inside the cave, where the skeleton of a young woman is embedded in the rock. This famed crystallized maiden, who was sacrificed to the gods, provides a fascinating glimpse of life during Mayan times.

If you like the idea of visiting a tropical paradise with both beaches and jungles, as well as warm and inviting people, then Belize may be your ideal destination. Another big benefit is the relatively low cost of traveling there, especially when compared to the high season rates currently being charged on most of the other Caribbean islands during the winter.

Tiger Tracking in India - Days 2, 3 and 4

When Internet connectivity permits, they're sharing their impressions of the culture, sights, foods, and experiences from this mysterious and fascinating destination.

Day 2-3 After an early breakfast, we were chauffeured to the airport to board our flight to Jodhpur. Once we arrived, we had a 2-hour private transfer to our next hotel, The Mihirgarh -- a themed boutique property with just nine luxurious suites. Each suite has more than 1700 square feet of private space. This is truly a special place to soak up the culture and get in an "India state of mind." We have two nights here to experience all the resort has to offer (camel cart excursions, equestrian activities with their own breed of horses called "Marwari," a gorgeous spa and lots of treasures still to be discovered!)

Day 4
After a leisurely breakfast at Mihirgarh, we were chauffeured back to the “Blue”city of Jodhpur, to Umaid Bhawan Palace where we were met with champagne, rose petals and marigold leis.
Situated on the edge of the Thar Desert, Jodhpur is the capital of Marwar. It is set like a jewel in the golden sands and is famous for its magnificent forts and palaces from the Rajput era. The city is home to some of the finest architectural wonders in India.

After a short rest we took a tour of the Palace and now have first hand knowledge of this magnificent heritage hotel that we can share with our clients. Food is definitely a highlight of this hotel. We were treated to a sumptuous lunch to fortify us for the days activities!

First on the docket -- “Jaswant Thada”. This is a white marble memorial built in 1899 in memory of Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The monument is built out of intricately carved sheets of marble. These stones are extremely thin and polished so that they emit a warm glow when the sun’s rays dance across their surface.

Next, we toured the extravagant Mehrangarh Fort. We were all amazed by the intricate latticed windows, elaborately carved panels and elegantly curved porches. We visited the palaces and temples built by successive rulers, with priceless jewels and a dazzling collection of arms. Not surprising to any of us, the jewel collection was the highlight of the day for Catherine!

Capella Pedregal

This jaw-dropping resort opened in July of 2009 – Pedregal is the Beverly Hills of Cabo. Capella Pedregal is distinguished from the other luxury properties in the area because it is just steps away – not a $60 - $80 cab ride – from the legendary nightlife, dining and shopping of Cabo San Lucas – but it’s insulated from the lights and the noise of the city. The Greenbrier: A Winter Wonderland

Katherine Gould is a travel expert for Brownell Travel. She has just returned from a snowy trip to The Greenbrier where she ended up staying an extra day because of all the snow!

It started with an ominous weather forecast. Snow, snow, and more snow! Not to be deterred from accepting a gracious invitation to experience firsthand the elegance and luxury of The Greenbrier, I made my way into the mountains of West Virginia for what promised to be a weekend to remember.

My husband and I were just one hour away from the resort when the snow started to fall, and before we knew it, a full-blown, pre-Christmas blizzard was upon us! We fortunately made it safely and realized later that evening just how lucky we had been to arrive when we did, as conditions quickly worsened throughout the afternoon, making it virtually impossible for those behind us to reach the resort until the next day. Before it was all over, almost two feet of snow had fallen!

Located in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, The Greenbrier has it all - gorgeous architecture, uniquely beautiful interior design, fantastic dining, a first class spa, endless activities for guests of all ages, and truly exceptional service. The impeccable service started with the welcoming faces and kind words of the front gate guards, and it remained consistently wonderful until the moment we were sent off on our way home with a smile and two bottles of water for the road. I’ve honestly never encountered a group of people so loyal and willing to do whatever it took to make my stay special in every way.

The recent arrival of Jim Justice as the new owner was a turning point for a resort in need of innovation. Mr. Justice is a legendary West Virginian businessman who saw a unique opportunity to take ownership of his state’s beloved landmark and lead it in a new direction. Under Mr. Justice’s leadership, there are numerous, exciting changes taking place. In addition to the recent opening of Prime 44 West, a premier steakhouse honoring Hall of Fame basketball player Jerry West, construction has already begun on an 80,000 square foot casino which will be located underground beneath the front entrance. The Casino will feature an elegant, Monte Carlo-style decor and is scheduled to open in April 2010. In the meantime, the resort has opened a smaller,more intimate casino called The Tavern, which will be available for private parties after the bigger casino opens its doors this spring. Additionally, The Greenbrier recently announced that it will be hosting the PGA tour’s newest event, called The Greenbrier Classic. Now an official stop on the PGA tour, the resort will have another reason to lure visitors to its historic fairways.

When asked the question, “Who are the best types of clients to send to The Greenbrier?” I tell people the resort offers something for everyone. It’s perfect for families, multi-generational gatherings, romantic getaways and corporate retreats. I’m partial to the Spa for its robust menu of services, talented staff, and lovely ambiance, but there are so many other wonderful things to see and do during your stay. Golf, tennis, bowling, falconry, off-road driving, hiking, swimming (indoor and outdoor), sleigh riding, horseback riding, and white water rafting are just some of the many activities offered. For the little ones, there is a great children’s program as well.

Because of the snowstorm, I had the good fortune of extending my stay for one extra day. Between the beautiful Christmas decorations, snowy grounds, and fine dining, I was happy to be “stranded!” Consider this legendary resort for your next special occasion or if you just need to get away for a few days. I can’t imagine a better place to spend some downtime in the gracious and pampering hands of a staff who will welcome you back year after year.

Golfing in Hawaii!

Debbie Fairvalley is a travel expert for Sterling Brownell. She has just returned from a trip to Hawaii for her daughters golf tournament and some incredible travel experiences!

ATLANTA – KUAUI CHALLENGE
I recently had the privilege of witnessing a wonderful cultural exchange on the golf course in Kuaui, Hawaii. It happened to involve my 16 year old daughter, Wallis. She plays tournament golf for AJGA an Atlanta based tour that features young golf stars before they hit the college/professional level. Over the past nine years AJGA and the Kuaui junior golfers have battled it out for braggin’ rites and a beautiful silver trophy cup. Kuaui won the event in 2008 so it was imperative that our Atlanta team bring their A game! And WIN we did with our juniors winning in 18 of the 25 matches played. Wallis won both her matches!!! This exchange is about so much more than just golf – our children got an opportunity to see “first hand” how travel creates lasting and memorable experiences and relationships that last a lifetime. Our team was housed by the local junior golf families and treated to wonderful Hawaiian hospitality. We need more of these events in our kids lives….. While Wallis was golfing and enjoying the kindness of the Oda family, I was experiencing my own bliss at the new St. Regis Princeville….What a spectacular property and location! And to make it even better I was able to meet Mitzi Gaynor (from South Pacific fame) who happened to be at the hotel for a tribute to the movie! The property features the elegance of the St. Regis brand on a beach that is the most beautiful in the islands.

Because Kuaui is a difficult island to truly see by land – Wallis & I chose to view it by helicopter! What an experience to take off to the music from Raiders of the Lost Arc (filmed on Kuaui) and fly over the tree canopy from Jurassic Park and other famous movie settings. It was both inspiring and exciting. Finishing off the helicopter tour with majestic vistas of the Napali Coast leaves you breathless.

After tournament play had finished on Saturday we decided to spend the night in a more ‘traditional’ setting by staying at the Grand Hyatt Poipu. This hotel represents the “best” of what you come to Hawaii for. The lagoons, the ocean, the cliff diving, the lovely Hawaiian music nightly overlooking the sunset, and the friendly people make this hotel a favorite of mine! A quick trip to Oahu (for Wallis to see Pearl Harbor, Waikiki, and do a little North Shore surfing) and our Hawaii adventure came to a close. But what a way to end it – at the wonderful Kahala Hotel in Diamond Head……the dolphins, the turtles, and the ambiance of sitting in a hammock only minutes away from Waikiki enjoying a “tropical beverage” made me never want to leave. Wallis even woke up early to enjoy the outdoor dining at breakfast – when the beach was calm and the playful marine life was most active. Our lagoon room allowed us to sit on our patio and watch the dolphins “do their thing” jumping and posing for us. Bidding Aloha to Hawaii was difficult but I know we will return – and I know Wallis will never forget her friendships made, the sites she visited, the emotion she felt seeing Pearl Harbor for the first time, and the experience she had with her mother…..I know I won’t!

Morocco Travel Adventure

Morocco means "THE WEST" or Place that the SUN goes down. Berbers(non Arabic speakers) were the first inhabitants of the country and then the Jewish, Muslim, Portugese and French. They are currently 95% Muslim, but no extremist/terrorists reside there.
We flew into in Casablanca, drove straight to Fes and stayed at Riad Maison Bleue. These are musicians in Fes at a restaurant. They entertained while we ate. We toured the 9th century Medina as well as the 14th century(which houses the Royal Palace) and 20th century cities surrounding the original city.

We drove to Erfoud and then took 4x4s to our Berber desert encampment for the night.
This was a Berber house in the desert near Erfoud. We stopped by to give crayons to the children.
We rode camels at sunrise to the tops of the dunes-incredible! Our next stop was the Skoura Oasis to stay at Dar Ahlam a Relais/Chateaux property where we had a tea ceremony in an old kasbah on a mountaintop at sunset. We also drove over the highest pass Tizi N Tishka in High Atlas to Marrakesh where I attended the first PURE conference for 5 days with some colleagues. The entire journey was remarkable and I hope to return soon!

Insider Info: How We Work with Honeymoon Clients

Alyssa Schulke, a rising star in the travel industry and an independent travel advisor with Brownell, was recently interviewed by Agent at Home Magazine to get her tips on qualifying honeymoon and romance clients. Read Alyssa's insights about how she works with couples to start their first travel experience as husband and wife off on the right foot!

I meet them in person whenever I can, or at least have a conference call with them both on the phone. I always find out more about the couple when we can have a conversation.
I have a quick two page survey I ask them to fill out prior to our meeting – this deals with not just the honeymoon details, but their hobbies and what they like to do as a couple. This is especially useful for couples who have no idea where they want to go.
I ask them how close to the budget they want me to stay – some couples like pie in the sky, while some are very concerned about the numbers. I also ask whether their budget includes activities and transportation, or just air and hotel? I’ve found some couples haven’t considered that question.
I also encourage the use of registries for the activities that may be beyond their budget but they still really want to do.

Sailing "Under the Mediterranean Moon"....Rome to Barcelona on Windstar

Author & Chef David Shalleck painted such a vibrant and colorful picture of the islands off the Italian coast in his wonderful book A Mediterranean Summer, I just had to visit them. If you love food, rich histories, charming villages, beautiful crystal clear waters, and sailing under beautiful sunsets, then this Windstar cruise is for you!

My journey began in Rome. Having never visited Rome before, I was in awe of the sheer beauty of this wonderful place. To watch the Coliseum develop like a painting at different times of the day (from bright light to intense rusts and purples as the sun set, to magically being illuminated by moonlight) was one of the most spectacular sights I have ever seen. Rome (and Italy for that matter) is a city for the senses! The colors, the tastes, the smells, the sounds, & “oh” the romance…..it has just surpassed Paris as my favorite city!

I stayed at the Hotel Majestic. I felt so “at home” here, on this tree lined street only a short walk from the Spanish Steps. I felt as though I was staying with friends overlooking the Villa Borghese gardens. I thoroughly enjoyed having my cappuccino every morning on the pristine terrace being attended to by a staff whose sole aim is to make you feel cared for and welcome. My room was exactly what I pictured a Roman villa should look like, from the high gloss white walls and ceilings to the cool marble bathroom. Flinging open my huge window I could truly feel “La Dolce Vita” . The hallways are decorated with black & white photos of Fellini’s Rome and stars from the 50’s & 60’s. It provided a calm respite from the tourists flocking into the city for the July sales. Everything in Rome was “on sale”! I intend to make another journey next year at the same time with my 16 year old and shop all day – every day! In my short time I did happen to do some damage at La Furla (a VERY Italian leather store…) at the base of the Spanish Steps.

Touring Rome was pure joy! A private guide at the Vatican pointed out all the nuances of the Sistine Chapel, the art, and St. Paul’s Basilica. He was an art major and spoke fluent English! Not to mention quite cute and charming…..I wouldn’t do the Vatican without a private guide. He not only knows how to get you in without standing in line, but cuts through all the expanse of overwhelming art and antiquity to focus your time on what is truly a highlight. I would have missed the little corner of the Sistine Chapel left as it was found decades ago as a comparison to the newly restored works had it not been for Geno. Nor would I have discovered one of the best restaurants in the Jewish Grotto without his recommendation. I had no idea artichokes could be prepared so many ways or taste so delectable in every dish!

Walking every neighborhood stalking the best gelato place proved another success story with the discovery of Gelato Della Palma near the Pantheon! In 365 days you could barely sample every flavor. I have never seen (or tasted) such a decadent ice cream shop…..Well worth the tired feet and exploration.

I dropped a coin in the Trevi Fountain to assure my return and made my way to Civitavecchia (the port) to board my home for the next 8 days – the Wind Surf II.

This 312 passenger sailing vessel is THE way to sail the Med! There is nothing more authentic than sitting on the deck in the evening under a moonlit sky hearing and seeing the white sails float in the breeze. You get a small feeling of what the pirates and sailors of yesterday must have felt – it is truly invigorating!

My cabin was quite spacious with a newly refurbished bathroom and granite counter tops. Flat screen TV’s, L’Occitane amenities, Bose Ipod speakers, and luxury bed linen made the room comfortable for extended stays – too bad I only had 1 week…..

The predominately Thai & Filipino crew knows something about service and anticipating a person’s needs. They were gracious, thoughtful, and offered some of the best massages I have ever had. Dining options are numerous and offer an opportunity to dine al fresco at 2 different venues. I specifically selected a night we were in Sardinia (knowing we would be anchored at sea) to provide the best views of the coast at sunset to dine under the stars! The filet mignon wasn’t bad either…..Watching the lights come on in the harbor was as pretty as watching the many sunsets we saw from land.

The food is good, not great….But the atmosphere makes up for what the food might be lacking!

Since we were in port many evenings – it was nice to have the option of dining in the local restaurants and taverns. Visiting 3 different countries made for some wonderful food experiences.

Our itinerary included the ports of Elba, Sardinia, Corsica, Mallorca, & Menorca. These less “touristy” islands were a perfect backdrop for a more authentic experience.

Elba is located off the Tuscany coast and produces some wonderful wine! Once on the island I understand why Napoleon made his home here….The scenery features rugged pink granite cliffs and small private coves where beachcombers can be truly undisturbed. The wonderful caccuicco (fish soup) is an island delicacy and pairs well with the Procancio (local wine of Elba). I took a quaint little catamaran trip on the M/N Nautilus (complete with underwater viewing) to see the great diving and snorkeling areas around Elba. They are accessible only by boat and offer wonderful reefs with many varieties of fish. This is as close to deep sea diving that I want to get! This archipelago toscano features the largest Marine Park in the Mediterranean, so actual divers and snorkelers would be most happy here.

We sailed into Portoferraio (a bit larger and more shopping/nightlife) but I believe the “rich and famous” sail into Porto Azzurro (approximately a 25 minute drive from Portoferraio) on their private yachts and sailboats. This quaint fishing village features some of the best beaches on the island and shouldn’t be missed!

9:30 pm and we are off to France! Our next island is Corsica and the port of Porto Vecchio….This “island of beauty” is full of different landscapes. It has it all from granite mountaintops to crystal clear blue beaches (and very French in flavor and fashion). You must take the 45 minute drive to Bonifacio and take in the vistas from the Citadel this is the Gibraltar of the Mediterranean! But be sure you have arranged for a driver – cabs are scarce on this little piece of paradise and those that did not have a prearranged “ride” were not able to hire a cab. I loved this island and would return here for a full summer (if time or life permitted..) The food (cheese & wine shops) were exquisite. And no one should come home without a true Corsican knife - these beautiful hand crafted knives are famous around the world for their detail as well as their functionality. My husband (an avid hunter & fisherman) was thrilled!

This island “rocks”! The nightlife doesn’t really get started until late in the evening and the clubs have the “beautiful” people dancing until the wee hours of the morning – this is really the place to see and be seen among the jet set crowd.

Ah, Sardinia! Our third stop on this sail was a “quest for coral”! I truly shopped until I dropped looking for the most spectacular coral necklace I could find. This coral capital features some of the most beautiful pieces of jewelery and decorative art I have ever seen. My quest did produce a lovely piece I have gotten many compliments on since I have been home. There is a quaint little train that meets you at the dock (we tendered, so our little boats ran constantly every 20 minutes or so) and takes you on a 25 minute ride through the old town. This was a great way to get an overview and decide where you wanted to actually “land”. Also gave you an opportunity to scope out your spot for lunch. There is a pecorino cheese produced here that is to “die for”….I managed to stuff some of this in my suitcase and now delight my “foodies” in Atlanta on occasion.
After lunch, I felt like an adventure so I took in Neptune’s Caves or Grotto de Nettuno as the Sardinians call it. And what an adventure it was! Just positioning our little boat into the opening of a cave as the waves crashed us from side to side was bad enough – but then having to “walk the plank” over these same crashing waves into the cave itself – proved a bit much for some of those who didn’t have their sea legs well in tact. The caves were beautiful but less impressive than watching the passengers try to navigate the whole embarkation or disembarkation experience. Not sure this one would make US safety standards.

It was back to the ship at sunset to get ready for my dinner under the stars @ 9pm! You could faintly hear the music from the taverns in the port and while the sky went from blue to orange to purple and the night stars came out – I feasted on a delicious 6 course meal al fresco on the deck of the Wind Surf II. So this is what “experiential travel” is all about???? WOW is all I can say.
Day 4 at sea gave me an opportunity to “spoil” myself with exercise (yoga classes), golf putting tournament, blackjack tournament, and a blissful Thai massage that is one of the best I have ever had. Finish this off with a manicure and pedicure and my day is complete. I debated room service, but decided to mingle with others at Degrees (a small dining area featuring Asian fusion cuisine) tonight.

8:00 am Welcome to Spain! Arrival into Palma Mallorca was less than majestic! This bustling port of 300,000 residents proved to me the best way to see Mallorca was to get out of Palma. Within 15 minutes of leaving the city in my private car (headed for Deja) I found the beautiful Mallorca. This hilltop tour past Valldemossa (where Chopin lived and composed) took us on the “Path of the Archduke”. Many people hike this – I was in an air conditioned Mercedes – my preference! With each turn in the road the scenery became more spectacular. From the domed cathedrals to the hilltop monasteries, these stone buildings take your breath away!

Upon arrival in Deja (an artist colony on the northwest coast of Mallorca) I understood why so many celebrities have homes here. The contrast of the stone buildings with the red bouganvilla and the blue sea vistas produced some of the most memorable photos of the trip. Deja is a city dating back to prehistoric times. There are many natural springs. Olive production is taken very seriously in Deja and everyone produces their own oil (from century old family recipes). I must have sampled at least 10 varieties, all exceptional!

The secret “gem” of this area is La Residencia (an Orient Express hotel) tucked into the hillside village of Deja. If I ever decide to take a second honeymoon this would be the spot! I would stay in Suite 66 (complete with private pool and wonderful outdoor patio), light a fire every evening, sip champagne overlooking the Tramuntana mountains at sunset, and order room service every day! I might be coaxed out of my room occasionally to experience the fabulous spa (a few short steps below me…).

I had a delightful lunch ( 2 ½ hours long) the way lunch should be experienced….of local tapas, fresh fish, and wonderful local wine in Son Fony at the hotel. This outdoor dining area provides wonderful views of the beautiful landscaped grounds of La Residencia and the village of Deja across the street. “ Magical” is the best word to describe this wonderful villa of La Residencia.

After an entire day spent in Deja I regret I must return to the busy port of Palma. But the Wind Surf II awaits……

Early to bed tonight in order to awake early enough to see our arrival into the harbor of Mahon, Spain. This is the most spectacular harbor we visit on our 8 day journey. We enter Mahon at 7:00 am to the rich colors of a sun just beginning to peek through the morning sky. This made for great photography! Menorca is a quiet little island (completing the 3 Spanish Mediterranean islands of Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza). It offers some of the best beaches anywhere – and most secluded. This island also features some remnants of windmills (making it look a bit more “Greek” to me). The whitewashed buildings surrounding the port offer great tapas and wonderful “people watching” spots. I found great shopping here for anything “nautical”. Mahon caters to private sailing yachts and being a Saturday, it seemed as though everyone was “at sea”.
No trip to Menorca would be complete without a visit to see the black Menorcan horses that “dance” in the streets during the jaleo festivals. They actually dance on their hind legs to the music played by the brass bands. These fiestas are celebrated every June to September throughout the summer in Menorca. If you are an equestrian, this island is for you!

A perfect ending to the day offered me a chance to reflect on a wonderful week at sea by enjoying an afternoon cocktail on the beach at Cala Turqueta. This quiet cove with crystal clear water helped me wind down and take it all in! What a wonderful experience….

The final night on the ship was one of fun and revelry! The ship’s crew put on a wonderful “show” for us allowing us to see they had more talent than just the ability to make us all feel special. We said our goodnights and good-byes to a wonderful trip and hoping we would all reconnect down the road on future Windstar sailings – “where are we sailing next? Greece, the Orient, the Caribbean…. all I know is I will certainly do this again!

Adventure Travel in Mexico

Bowden Sarrett, one of our top Mexico travel specialists, has just returned from a fantastic stay at Capella Ixtapa Resort & Spa. While there, she had a blast rapelling and zip-lining--Read about it and see her great photos below!

In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico we did a full day excursion with Vallarta Adventures. We began our adventure in Nuevo Vallarta, where we boarded a boat. (There they have huge tanks and work with and train dolphins and I assume have regular shows and swim sessions.). We took the inflatable boat ride to a tiny village where we got in the back of a truck to ride up the mountain. Seat belts required! Finally at the top we were outfitted with climbing harnesses and helmits and applied lots of bug spray before we mounted surefooted mules for a slow ride to the summit. After a safety talk and an up close visit with a tarantula we descended by multiple zip lines over the trees and waterfalls and also did a little bit of rapelling which twice landed us in freezing cold water. The day involved a little bit of hiking and lots of fun and the reward at the end was chips and salsa before the ride down the mountain in that same old truck. They had cold beer for sale too! Below are more fun photos. This experience is a must for anyone wanting a bit of adventure while on vacation in Mexico!

A Kid Friendly Retreat in Las Vegas

I don’t generally recommend Las Vegas as a family vacation destination, but sometimes a trip there is necessary due to family or work obligations. Parents can avoid the casinos, clubs, and any other “scenery” they find too risqué for their children, yet still enjoy luxurious amenities and exemplary service by staying at the Four Seasons Hotel. Located near the airport, in the Mandalay Bay complex, the Four Seasons offers a non-smoking, non-gaming retreat. In fact, when sitting poolside, or enjoying a meal on the terrace, it almost feels like being in Hawaii. Yet steps away are the casinos and pools of Mandalay Bay, as well as a complimentary car service ready to whisk guests in comfort to other destinations on The Strip.I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas, and though I was not with my children, the family-friendliness of the hotel was evident. In fact, I ran into several parents with young children during my stay. The rooms are spacious, and the one bedroom suites are particularly nice for families as they have a sofa bed in the living room. There’s even ample space for a rollaway (which was one of the plushest I have ever seen), so each child can have their own bed. The main Four Seasons pool is modest in size compared to other Las Vegas hotel pools, but it is quiet and well-staffed with pool attendants who promptly bring towels and a pitcher of ice water with lemon wedges. There’s even a sunglass butler to clean guests’ glasses and tighten up loose screws. A small wading pool located on the far side of the bar gives parents with young children their own retreat. And for children of all ages (even grown-ups), the Mandalay Bay wave pool and lazy river are just steps away through a private gate which only Four Seasons guests may use. The Four Seasons Hotel actually occupies the 35th through 39th floors of the Mandalay Bay tower. However check-in is completely separate, and guests take an express elevator to their rooms. The Loss of a Friend and Visionary

Anton Turner, a dear friend and safari guide and manager at Lukula Selous Camp, was tragically killed on Friday, October 30 while on a filming expedition with BBC in Selous. Please read Brownell Travel Advisor Vicki Upchurch's note about Anton below.

This spring a darling young man from Tanzania came to stay in our guest house. He arrived in the U.S. without a credit card (believed in the cash system) so he could not rent a car or, in some cases, a hotel room. He borrowed a car from a mutual friend in Boulder and drove to the mountains. He and his father had been hunters but realized that education was the way to preserve Africa and founded the Selous Project. He had just been featured in Elite Traveler when he arrived here and was so surprised and pleased when I showed him the issue.

He gave me a DVD of what he was doing, which I made copies of and sent to the offices, and he was doing great work. He had a vision, and a plan, and was starting to make it come together. Keeping in touch with him this year has been so much fun as his enthusiasm for what he was doing was infectious. He was seeing his dream become reality and he was about to become a first time father.

Even though his life has been cut short, his dream will live on.

This makes the saying "live your life as if every day was your last" even more poignant.

Getaway on Turks and Caicos

Alysia Hopper and her family took time for some Caribbean travel in the beautiful Virtuoso resorts on Turks and Caicos this summer. Read below about their fabulous experiences!

My family and I recently returned from a little summer break week in Turks and Caicos. I was amazed at the development the island has seen! There is building galore going on and Grace Bay Beach has really become lined with hotels.

If a luxury beach vacation on Turks is calling you but you have a desire to still get away from it all, consider booking a hotel off of the main island. Parrot Cay is a wonderful 5 star resort on its own island about a 15 -20 minute boat ride away. It is a VIRTUOSO property and along with rooms, you may also rent homes for larger family stays. Among the homes for rent there are Donna Karan’s compound and Bruce Willis’ compound. The resort is low key luxe at its best.

Another great option for those who wish to be closer to the action but still want that private island feeling is AMANYARA. Another VIRTUOSO property located at the Northwest point of Provo with 99 of its own acres., it takes 25 mins to get here from the airport or (anywhere else in town) and the last 10 minutes of this is on an unmarked dirt road…the contrast between your drive into the resort and the resort itself is fantastic! The resort is an oasis of serenity and beauty…an amazing place. I highly recommend it for a couples get away. There are no connecting “rooms’” at this resort, so this not ideal for families. While there are fabulous villas to rent for a multi generational get away, its still better if your kids are a little older as the rooms at the villa are also separated from one another by a pool or a reflecting pond (depending on the villa chosen). As far as activities go, there are many to choose from. A highlight for us was a sunset ride along Long Bay beach with Provo Ponies (http://www.provoponies.com/) This was definitely a treat! The tide was high so we could not “swim” with our horses, but we will plan it for low tide next time. Some other things we enjoyed were: spa treatments at the Regent Palms hotel, a snorkeling trip with Big Blue Unlimited (http://www.bigblue.tc/) out to water cay, pine cay and parrot cay.

Another treat was the food! We enjoyed a great casual meal on the beach at Horse Eye Jacks, a superb lunch at the Gansevoort hotel poolside, and a fine dining experience at Anacaona’s at the Grace Bay Club with a pre-drink at the Infinity Bar. My all time favorite dish, however, was the tuna sashimi appetizer (big enough to be eaten as the main entrée) at Coco Bistro. It was delicious! Other meals not to miss are dinner at dinner at Amanyara, my favorite new hotel in the Caribbean, and lunch poolside at Parrot Cay if you take a snorkel trip for the day.

A fantastic family vacation! We cant wait to go back!
